What’s your opinion on the matter?

I’m personally outraged that Tosh said what he did to that girl. Rape on its own is not funny, but actually telling someone to their face that he thought it’d be funny if she got GANGRAPED? Wow. Just wow. That’s not cool.

I read a news article about his supposed apology (which, to be honest, sounded pretty goddamn backhanded and it REALLY didn’t sound like he was taking responsibility for what he said) and he tried to explain that all he wanted to do was say it’s okay to make humor of an otherwise bad situation. And you know what? I’m okay with that. I use humor to cope with all sorts of crappy stuff that’s happened in my life. But Tosh has never been raped, and he’s not a woman, and those are two things he’ll probably never understand and DEFINITELY not things he should be joking about.

As far as I’m concerned, Daniel Tosh encouraged people to rape. He basically said “rape is okay”. And it’s not. And if he honestly wants people to forgive him, then he needs to realize that and apologize properly. Don’t try to justify it, because you can’t. Just put on your big boy pants and realize what you said was wrong, offensive, and generally terrible. And then come back and apologize properly for what you did. And he shouldn’t just apologize to the general public; the girl he harassed deserves it more than anything. I feel terrible that this had to happen.

To be honest, I like to think I have a pretty wide berth when it comes to things I’ve laughed at. I bet, if Tosh had maybe poked fun at rape culture and done it in a way where nobody’s getting threatened or hurt, he wouldn’t have gotten the backlash that he has. Comedians has made “rape jokes” in the past, but they don’t explicitly tell people that rape in itself is funny and people being raped is funny. It’s possible to address controversial topics in a tasteful and lighthearted way. Daniel Tosh didn’t do that. He put an innocent girl on the spot and basically said ‘I hope you get raped. That would be funny.’ And that’s wrong. I’m almost tempted to say it’s unforgivable.

I wouldn’t wish ill on him though. That would just contribute to the hate cycle. All I hope is that he learns from his mistake, and this was definitely a big mistake. I hope he realizes there’s a line, and that he crossed it. I hope he figures out how to take responsibility for his actions properly, instead of crying that people just don’t understand him. And I really hope he makes it up to that girl somehow, even if she can’t find it in her heart to forgive him, which I can’t say I’d blame her for.
